Let’s set the rules straight on pussy grabbing.

A particularly unfunny meme is doing the rounds on social media at the moment. It depicts three famously outlandish female singers, and claims to point out an irony – that these women are vocally anti-Trump because of the whole ‘grab ’em by the pussy’ remark, and yet they all publically sexualise themselves by grabbing their own lady bits on a regular basis.

Sigh.

It would seem to me that, yet again, the public have spectacularly missed the point. Yes, this meme is ironic, but not for the reasons the person who created it, and those who subsequently shared it, think it is.

It seems obvious to me that there’s a massive difference between grabbing your own delicates, and them being grabbed by the human scrotum that is Donald Trump. I’m yet to meet a person who has pressed charges against themslves for masturbating.

But here’s the real rub, if you’ll pardon the pun; see, there’s this thing called Cultural Appropriation.

When I say cultural appropriation, you probably immediately think of trustafarian kids on a gap-year having fake dreads sewn into their hair on the Ko San Road, to look more ethnic; or to put it a less PC way, Wiggers.

White people have been ‘borrowing’ black culture, clothes, affectations etc. for years to seem more cool. I know it pisses the likes of Azealia Banks off, but you know what they say about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. Anyway, I digress.

Aside from adopting elements from other ethnicities, there are many kinds of cultural appropriation, and one of them is women ‘borrowing’ classic male posturing to assert their own power.

When Madonna, or Miley Cyrus, or Lady Gaga grab their lady parts and thrust them into our collective faces, they are using masculine behaviour to demonstrate that the pussy has power.

They are gender-bending to empower themselves and all women – not to degrade themselves.

That this meme has started to circulate at exactly the same time as the Women’s Rights March on Washington could either be happenstance, or it could be something more sinister.

When memes like this go around, they implant ideas into the collective consciousness, and on this occasion, the message I’m receiving, loud and clear, is the same old tired crap we’ve been fed all our lives:

  • Know your place.
  • If you attempt to own your female sexuality you’ll be vilified.
  • Sexually powerful woman = whore.

That’s why ‘ironic’ peices of catshit like this meme are not only sprit-crushingly stupid; they are also dangerous. But it would appear the irony was, indeed, lost on it’s creator.
